RCHC is delighted to announce an upcoming online lecture scheduled for Wednesday, April 17th, 4 p.m. (Beijing Time), titled “Cultural Crossroads: The Persian Vizier Rashid al-Din and the Birth of Sinology as an Islamic Science” This lecture will be presented by Francesco Calzolaio from the University of Hong Kong.

In this event, we will delve into the life and works of the Persian vizier Rashid al-Din, a preeminent figure in the early development of Sinology within the Islamic world. Rashid al-Din's engagement with Chinese history, geography, and culture was unprecedented in its scope and depth. Operating at the heart of the Mongol court in Iran, he embarked on a systematic study of China, relying on primary sources to produce an extensive corpus of Sinological writings. These works not only represent a quantum leap forward in Islamic knowledge of East Asia, but also stand as the first collection of Sinological scholarship in world history.
